King Alfonso: a grandpapa

March 5, 1939

Former King Alfonso XIII of Spain has become a grandfather, according to United Press.  His daughter-in-law, Maria de les Mercedes, the wife of the Count of Barcelona, gave birth to a daughter earlier today.

The baby was born at Rome's Anglo-American hospital.  Both mother and daughter are doing well.

The Count of Barcelona is the third son of King Alfonso, who one day "might occupy the Spanish throne" should the monarchy be restored.  Don Juan was present for his daughter's birth.

Both King Alfonso and Queen Ena were notified of their granddaughter's birth.
