Alfonso and Ena prepared for the worst

May 6, 1910

King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain expected that King Edward's "disease would end fatally," according to the Chicago Daily Tribune. They spent "the late hours of the night in receiving dispatches from London." They learned of the king's death at 1 a.m., this morning.
Queen Victoria Eugenia is the niece of Edward VII. Her mother, Princess Beatrice, is the late king's youngest sister.
